The latest video from XYZ Machine Tools Ltd takes just over one minute to demonstrate convincingly the ease with which an XYZ CNC/manual machine tool can be programmed – even by a CNC novice!
‘ProtoTRAK – CNC made easy’ shows clearly the way in which 2- or 3-axis ProtoTRAK controls, which are exclusive to XYZ, are programmed by responding to on-screen English language prompts. There’s no need to learn G and M codes, which means operator training typically takes less than a day.
ProtoTRAK will even calculate any missing dimensions in a canned cycle such as pocket milling before running through the entire program prior to actual machining. Having verified the program on-screen, machining can take place under manual or computer control, with the operator able to switch between machining modes at any point in the production cycle.

XYZ describes ProtoTRAK as ‘simply the best technology solution for small batch machining available today’. It is, as this video shows, the ideal way to effect a dramatic reduction in set-up times and, therefore, to reduce significantly the labour cost involved in prototype and low volume machining. This equates to more competitive quotes and delivery times.
Depending on the complexity of the component, programming can take literally minutes or, better still, if drawings are produced by a CAD system, no time at all, courtesy of the on-board DXF File Converter. ProtoTRAK SMX for milling machines is available in 2- or 3-axis format, with canned cycles including pockets, pockets with islands, thread milling, bolt hole patterns, and drilling, tapping and boring. Similarly, ProtoTRAK SLX for lathes provides clearance cycles, profiling, grooving, drilling routines, and standard and custom threads.
