An innovative parting off unit designed in Germany is said to deliver around 60% savings in material and cut up to four times faster than conventional methods, according to the manufacturer.
The PTZ Ring Cutter is available is available in the UK through Heathfield, East Sussex-based bandsaw specialist and blade supplier, Saws UK. Using the latest chip breaking carbide blades – originally designed for high speed billet cut off machines – kerf wastage is said to be reduced from 20mm to 3mm.
Available on a 12 week leadtime from the machine manufacturer, the sawing unit with pick and place clamping system can be retrofitted to an existing vertical lathe or supplied as a turnkey package. The saw head rotates simultaneously with the lathe spindle to give an excellent surface finish whilst the workpiece is held securely by the patented clamping system.
Examples of cutting times are available to assist if costing: for example ring from steel 18Cr Ni Mo 7-6, 1,060mm diameter with 65mm wall resulted in a parting off time of 20 minutes.
Optional extras can be supplied with the kit such as drill, boring and tapping heads which can be used prior to parting off together with a deburring station to finish off the rings as they are removed by a pick and place unit.
Currently two machines are being installed in Nuremberg – one with 1,000mm capacity and the other with 2,000mm capacity to produce a predicted one million rings per annum.
